WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — Staff members from Ohio’s congressional delegation toured Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on Aug. 25, gaining a firsthand look at the wide range of missions that make the installation one of the most important in the U.S. Air Force.
The annual visit, organized in partnership with NASA Glenn Research Center, brings together both Washington, D.C.-based and district staff to better understand the base’s vital contributions to national defense, scientific advancement, and support for Airmen and their families.
“This tour started four years ago as a collaborative effort between Wright-Patterson and NASA Glenn,” said Lisa Hartman, Legislative Liaison at the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), headquartered at Wright-Patt. “We invite all Ohio congressional delegation staff so they can see the tremendous synergy that exists across the base’s major mission partners.”
The full-day tour gave participants broad exposure to the base. It began at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), where staff toured advanced laboratories focused on autonomy, directed energy, and additive manufacturing. They also learned about collaborative combat aircraft research aimed at making these systems more sustainable.
The group then visited the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) new DoW Supercomputing Research Center, followed by the Naval Medical Research Unit. There, they experienced the “Kraken,” a sophisticated disorientation research device used to train both military aircrew and NASA astronauts.
Additional stops included the Child Development Center, the base fire station, and the Honor Guard. Participants heard about real-world challenges facing the workforce, including aging infrastructure, childcare capacity, recruiting difficulties, and the impact of the fire station’s congressionally mandated 72-hour work week on retention and family life.
In the afternoon, staff received unclassified threat briefings from the National Air and Space Intelligence Center and the National Space Intelligence Center. The day concluded with a leadership panel in which senior officials from across the base discussed their organizations’ most pressing challenges to readiness.
Hartman stressed the unique value of having so many critical missions co-located at Wright-Patterson.
“There’s nothing in the Air Force that Wright-Patt doesn’t touch,” she said. “Our intelligence centers identify the threats. AFRL develops solutions to counter them. AFLCMC acquires and fields those capabilities. AFIT trains our Airmen, and the 88th Air Base Wing provides the infrastructure and support that makes it all possible.”
