Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington has named Joshua Denton, a contracting officer with the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) South Potomac, its Employee of the Year. Denton, who has been stationed at ROICC Dahlgren since February 2023, said the recognition means a great deal to him.
"I'm very grateful to be named Employee of the Year and to work for NAVFAC Washington," Denton said.
He credited his team and the broader Acquisition workforce for the award, pointing to a shared commitment to the command's mission.
"I work on a very good team, and I enjoy the work we do in Acquisition," he said. "We are committed to the mission and support one another."
In his role, Denton helps ensure the Navy has the facilities, infrastructure and services it needs to carry out its mission, while safeguarding the integrity of the acquisition process.
"My role helps ensure that we work with responsible contractors and awards made are fair and reasonable," Denton said.
He said his work is guided by a simple philosophy. "I believe in doing the right thing and being accountable," he said. "I believe in working hard."
Denton also plays an active role in mentoring younger professionals in the acquisition field, encouraging them to understand not just the process, but the purpose behind it.
"I try to be someone that any co-worker can approach with a question," he said, "sharing lessons learned throughout my time in Acquisition. I believe it is important to understand how to do something but also understand the 'why' behind it."
Denton began his career in Acquisition as an intern at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in 2017 and has served the Navy in various roles ever since.
He also expressed appreciation for his colleagues at Dahlgren, who supported him through a difficult personal chapter over the past year.
"Thank you to the Dahlgren team for their kindness to me in the last year, while I was a caregiver for my mom," Denton said.
