SEAL BEACH, Calif. - Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe (SSN 763) completed a successful, first-of-its-kind, weapons loading demonstration at Naval Weapons Seal Beach (NWSSB), Sept. 08, 2026.
Santa Fe’s arrival marked the first time a nuclear-powered submarine moored at NWSSB and the first onload and offload of MK-48 Advanced Capability torpedoes at NWSSB.
“Our Navy team’s ability to generate, sustain, and support the safe loading of MK-48 Torpedoes at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach demonstrates our commitment to warfighting and logistical agility,” said Capt. Phillip Sylvia Jr., commander, Submarine Squadron 11. “The successful completion of this demonstration is a direct reflection of the professionalism, collaboration, and commitment of the people involved, and we look forward to continuing to refine our procedures for future weapons movements at this location.”
The demonstration tested and validated the ability to load weapons aboard a nuclear-powered submarine at NWSSB, supporting the U.S. Navy’s ability to maintain fleet combat readiness and sustain logistical support at multiple locations in the Pacific.
NWSSB is the U.S. Navy’s primary West Coast ordnance storage, loading, and maintenance installation. Under Navy Munitions Command, cruisers, destroyers, and medium-sized amphibious assault ships receive missiles, torpedoes, countermeasure devices, and conventional ammunition at the facility’s 1100-foot-long pier.
Santa Fe is assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 11, home to four Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarines, which are capable of supporting various missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
