CARTERVILLE, Ill. — Sailors from Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Carbondale and NRS Paducah joined together Sept. 11, 2026, to represent the Navy and honor the lives and legacy of those affected by the Sept. 11 attacks during a 9/11 memorial ceremony held during the Carterville vs. Herrin football game. The Sailors participated in the ceremony on the football field, marching onto the field and parading the American and Navy flag as part of the community’s remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The annual observance provided an opportunity for local community members, students, athletes and service members to come together and reflect on the lives lost, the sacrifices made and the lasting impact of the attacks on the nation. For the Sailors of NRS Carbondale and NRS Paducah, participating in the ceremony provided an opportunity to represent the Navy while standing alongside members of the community in remembrance. More than two decades after Sept. 11, 2001, memorial events continue to serve as reminders of the importance of honoring those who were lost and recognizing the service and sacrifice of those who responded in the aftermath. The participation of local Sailors also highlighted the Navy’s connection to the communities it serves. Through events such as the 9/11 memorial ceremony, Navy recruiters have an opportunity to engage with community members beyond their recruiting mission and demonstrate the Navy’s commitment to service, remembrance and community.
