On Sept. 11, 2026, the White Sands Missile Range community gathered under the banner of “WSMR NEVER FORGET,” united in solemn remembrance of the lives lost on September 11, 2001. From first light, a powerful sense of reflection and solidarity filled the air as service members, first responders, families, and civilians came together to pay tribute. The weight of memory was ever-present, with many attendees recalling exactly where they were on that fateful morning, forging a shared bond of resilience and honor.
From the earliest moments of this somber day, leadership stood shoulder to shoulder with the community, offering support and solidarity. WSMR Garrison Commander Col. Michael Lueckeman not only attended but also served as the guest speaker at New Mexico State University’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Ceremony at Aggie Memorial Stadium. His participation highlighted WSMR's commitment to honoring the legacy of 9/11 alongside the Las Cruces community.
At the Headquarters Building, a poignant flag-raising ceremony unfolded, joining the WSMR Fire Department and soldiers in solemn tribute. Together, they honored the memory of those lost on 9/11, standing in silent reverence as the flag was raised, a powerful reminder of the day’s significance.
A solemn Remembrance Ceremony at the Post Chapel brought together service members, community members, and civilians, united by shared respect, grief, and resolve. Lueckeman delivered a moving speech that resonated deeply with all in attendance, reflecting on the enduring impact of 9/11. The ceremony culminated with the WSMR Fire and Police Departments performing a powerful final call tribute for 9/11, followed by the playing of taps, a stirring reminder of the sacrifices made and the unwavering spirit of first responders.
Afterward, the community moved to the Frontier Club for a special lunch honoring fire, police, and first responders. The lunch was a gesture of gratitude, open to all, and filled with stories of bravery and sacrifice.
Towards the end of the workday, the WSMR community assembled once more for the 9/11 Stair Climb at the LC32 Gantry. Participants, from seasoned service members to young dependents, climbed in remembrance of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. Every step was a tribute, every breath a reminder that the legacy of 9/11 continues to inspire courage and unity.
Through these acts of remembrance, the WSMR community ensured that 9/11 would always be a day of reflection, honor, and resilience, a day that would never be erased from memory.
