Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) has earned two prestigious environmental awards recognizing the command's longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, engineering innovation, and mission readiness.
The Industrial Environmental Association (IEA) of San Diego honored FRCSW with an Environmental Excellence Award for the construction and operation of the command's state of the art aircraft paint, corrosion control, and blast facility. The project significantly reduces energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and operating costs while providing modern, environmentally sustainable infrastructure to support naval aviation maintenance.
FRCSW was also selected by the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC) to receive its 2026 Professional Project Award for the command's integrated engineering approach to pollution prevention, resource conservation, and environmental compliance across its industrial operations.
While the awards recognize recent accomplishments, they also reflect more than a century of environmental stewardship at the command. FRCSW has continually demonstrated that environmental responsibility and operational excellence go hand in hand. Every improvement to industrial processes strengthens the command's ability to safely and efficiently deliver mission ready aircraft, engines, and components to the Fleet.
"Environmental stewardship is fundamental to mission readiness. Maintaining the highest environmental standards allows us to operate safely, efficiently, and responsibly while ensuring our Sailors and Marines receive the aircraft and equipment they need to fight and win." said Brian Powell – FRCSW Environmental Division Manager.
Among the initiatives recognized were construction of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum aircraft paint complex, modernization of energy efficient industrial systems and implementation of pollution prevention technologies that reduce hazardous materials and emissions while improving workplace safety and production efficiency. These projects are part of a much broader portfolio of continuous improvement efforts that include sustainable manufacturing practices, innovative engineering solutions, energy and water conservation initiatives, and modernization of legacy industrial processes.
The command's success is built upon an integrated management approach that combines environmental, safety, and quality management into every engineering decision. By leveraging Lean principles, Six Sigma methodologies and through use of collaboration across engineering disciplines, FRCSW consistently develops solutions that improve environmental performance while maintaining the rigorous quality and production standards required to support naval aviation.
Beyond its industrial operations, FRCSW continues to engage with the local community by participating in professional environmental organizations, sharing best practices with industry partners, and supporting educational outreach events that highlight sustainable production, manufacturing and responsible environmental management.
These awards underscore the commands reputation as a leader in environmental excellence throughout the Department of the Navy. More importantly, they reinforce that responsible environmental stewardship directly contributes to combat readiness. By maintaining full compliance with environmental regulations while continuously improving industrial capabilities, FRCSW remains well positioned to provide the Navy and Marine Corps warfighters with the tools they need to fight and win in any battle.
