KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — 1st Lt. Raynika Williams, a logistics officer assigned to the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, represented U.S. Army Europe and Africa at the Armed Forces women's flag football tournament, helping her team earn a second-place finish.
Williams, a Miami, Florida native, enlisted in the Army in 2017 and commissioned in 2023 through the Green to Gold program. She has served with the 21st TSC for six months.
Williams traveled to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, for the All-Army Sports selection program, where she was the only female Soldier from USAREUR-AF competing for a position on the team. The program selected fourteen Soldiers form the twenty participants who attended.
“I'm blessed because I was selected over all the players who were chosen to try out,” Williams said. “Even my packet being selected is an testament to how hard I work.”
Williams met soldiers from different units across the Army, allowing her to build new friendships and develop strong connections with people she otherwise might not have met.
“The biggest thing was mainly building chemistry with a different group of girls for two weeks, learning different plays, different cultures, styles, and everything,” Williams said. “I would say it was a great experience. I would definitely like to do it again.”
Following the two-week training period, Williams traveled with her teammates to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the Armed Forces Flag Football tournament.
“I play four different positions. Corner, safety, center and receiver,” Williams said. “So in flag football, they would call that an athlete because they have such a diverse role.”
Williams' athletic background includes flag football, basketball, softball and track and field. Her experience across multiple sports helped prepare her for different roles on the All-Army team.
For Williams, the most competitive part of the tournament was facing off against the Air Force. The Army’s women’s team went 2-1 against the Air Force's women’s team.
The All-Army women’s team placed second in the tournament after going 5-2. They finished with the same record as the Air Force, but in the championship game the Air Force came out on top.
“The competition was very good,” Williams said. “I think it made every one of us a better player and a better athlete.”
Williams hopes the sport continues to grow throughout the Army and encourages Soldiers to take advantage of opportunities to compete at the Army level.
The All-Army Sports program provides Soldiers opportunities to compete in a variety of sports as athletes and coaches. Soldiers interested in participating can find application information through Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation resources.
Williams said she hopes Soldiers' units continue to provide support to pursue opportunities to represent themselves, their units and the Army through competitive sports.
