FORT LEE, Va. — Hundreds of Fort Lee community members gathered Sept. 11 for the annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Fire and Emergency Services Station 2 to remember and honor the fallen service members, citizens and first responders who perished in the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. 25 years ago.
That day our nation suffered a horrific attack, nearly 3,000 lives were lost, and the world changed.
“An entire generation of Soldiers in our training schoolhouses right now were not yet born on September 11, [2001],” said Maj. Gen. Sean P. Davis, commanding general of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee senior commander. “For them, 9/11 is a chapter in the history books, which makes this event even more important—that it's engraved and burned into their memory, as well, their living memory through events like these.”
The crowd included Gold Star family members, who sat in front of the fire station between law enforcement vehicles and a fire station ladder truck displaying a large American flag.
U.S. Army Reserve veteran and military artist Henry Kidd served as guest speaker and unveiled a work of art that he designed and donated to Firehouse 2 to memorialize the victims and the heroes of September 11.
“These are the men and women we need to remember,” Kidd said. “These are the men and women [who] sacrificed it all.”
Assistant Fire Chief Dr. Robert Fleming led the sounding of the bell, a sacred fire service tradition honoring those who have answered their final alarm and to honor those who died in saving others on 9/11.
Fort Lee Police Chief Louis P. Ostmann, Jr. played the final police radio roll call, and Jodie Warren, a planning and process improvement specialist for the Defense Commissary Agency, performed “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes followed by “Taps” as played by a bugler with the T2COM band.
The U.S. Army remains deeply committed to honoring the lives lost on September 11 and the extraordinary courage of the military and civilian personnel who responded immediately at the Pentagon and Ground Zero.
