    NMLPDC’s “Snakes Alive!” Symposium Strengthens Readiness

    Naval Medical Leadership and Professional Development Command’s (NMLPDC) Professional Development Directorate recently hosted the “Snakes Alive!”, a specialized training symposium designed to enhance the operational knowledge and clinical readiness of participants in the Military Tropical Medicine (MTM) program. The symposium, held July 28 at the Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences, provided attendees with practical education on venomous reptiles, envenomation, and unique medical challenges military personnel may encounter while operating in tropical and austere environments.

    The training directly supports the MTM program’s mission of preparing military professionals to recognize, prevent, and respond to diseases, environmental hazards, and other health threats encountered during operations around the world. For medical personnel deploying to regions where venomous snakes and other reptiles are endemic, understanding these hazards can be critical to protecting the force and delivering timely medical care.

    Guest speaker Bruce Shwedick, an internationally experienced reptile educator and conservationist, guided participants through the identification, behavior, geographic distribution, and medical significance of some of the world’s most dangerous reptiles.

    “There are roughly 4,000 types of snakes across the globe, but only about 600 of them are venomous,” said Shwedick. “They range from the Barbados Thread snake, which holds the record as the shortest snake, to the massive, Reticulated Python, the longest snake in the world.”

    For MTM participants, the diversity of snake species represents more than an academic topic. Military personnel routinely deploy to environments where unfamiliar wildlife and limited access to definitive medical care can complicate the management of bites and envenomation. The ability to recognize regional threats, understand snake behavior, and rapidly identify signs of serious envenomation contributes directly to force health protection and operational medical readiness.

    Participants also learned why seemingly simple approaches to snake handling can be dangerous.
    The Stiletto Snake, for example, possesses a unique, highly flexible fang structure that allows it to strike sideways. Because of this adaptation, it is hard to impossible to hold or pick up a Stiletto Snake safely behind the head. Such examples reinforced that successful management of environmental threats begins with understanding the hazard and avoiding unnecessary exposure.
    Shwedick also discussed the diversity of reptile biology and behavior. “Sea snakes have a live birth but their close marine relatives, the Sea Kraits, lay eggs,” said Shwedick. “A particularly quirky detail about the venomous lizards Gila monsters is that they sleep on their backs.” These differences illustrate the wide range of species military personnel may encounter across operational environments.

    The symposium’s most important medical component focused on envenomation recognition and response.

    “There are three types of snake bites,” said Shwedick. “The first is a strike with no venom, often called a ‘dry bite,’ where the snake strikes defensively but chooses not to inject toxins. The second type involves little venom, resulting in a mild envenomation that may cause severe localized pain and tissue damage but progresses slowly. The third and most dangerous is a bite with a lot of venom, a massive injection of toxins that immediately becomes a systemic, life-threatening medical emergency.”

    For military medical professionals, distinguishing between these presentations and recognition clinical deterioration can be critical, particularly in remote locations where evacuation and access to antivenom may be delayed.

    The training emphasized that suspected envenomation requires rapid medical assessment, appropriate consultation, and coordination for definitive treatment. Understanding how to access specialized toxicology and antivenom resources is an important component of preparing military personnel to manage these uncommon but potentially catastrophic emergencies.

    By incorporating subject matter expertise on venomous reptiles into the MTM curriculum, “Snake Alive!” transforms knowledge of regional wildlife into operationally relevant medical preparedness. The symposium reinforces the broader purpose of the MTM training: ensuring military healthcare professionals can identify environmental and infectious threats, make informed clinical decisions, and protect the health of service members wherever military operations occur.

    Training opportunities such as “Snakes Alive!” also demonstrate the value of collaboration between NMLPDC, the Uniform Services University, and civilian subject matter experts. These partnerships provide military medical professionals with specialized knowledge that may not be routinely encountered in stateside clinical practice but can become essential during deployments, humanitarian missions, exercises, and contingency operations.

    Through the Military Tropical Medicine program, NMLPDC continues to develop medical professionals who are prepared not only for the conditions they routinely treat, but also for the unpredictable environmental and clinical challenges of operational medicine.
