MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force – Darwin 26 Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force and the Australian Defence Force will participate in community and ceremonial events surrounding the first-ever regular-season NFL game in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sept. 11, 2026.
Engagements began Sept. 6 as Marines participated in a youth flag football and STEM clinic with the NFL. On Sept. 10, a joint taps ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance featured a 10-member MRF-D color guard and ceremonial detail to honor the fallen of both nations.
On Sept. 11, a combined contingent of about 150 Marines and Sailors will present a joint color guard and 75 flag holders on the field. The game’s opening ceremony also will feature a flyover by four MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and six RAAF Roulettes. After the third quarter, an on-field pilot recognition ceremony and a 20-second video tribute from MRF-D will highlight the wartime history of “Camp Murphy” at the MCG and the U.S.-Australia alliance.
“American football being played on Australia’s premiere sporting venue, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, provides a special opportunity to showcase the U.S. Marine Corps’ enduring partnership alongside the ADF,” said Col. George Flynn, commanding officer of MRF-D 26 SPMAGTF. “Sport unites us, and our engagements this week highlight the mutual trust and deep respect held between our nations. As we mark 25 years since the tragedy of Sept. 11 during this NFL game in Australia, we honor our shared sacrifices and our solemn promise to secure peace.”
