JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – “Continued communication, collaboration, and networking keeps connection and builds bonds with our peers and our partners,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Gregory Betty, command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Reserve, during the Senior Enlisted Council workshop here Aug. 28-30.
The Senior Enlisted Council is a key forum for the highest-ranking enlisted leaders in the reserve, bringing together command sergeants major from across service components aligning on troop and mission readiness capabilities and priorities.
“We must bring all the forces together so we can learn from and get to know one another before we get to the fight line,” Betty continued.
The council advises leadership on policies that impact each reserve component’s ability to meet mission requirements including training standards, operational readiness, and the importance of joint interoperability.
“Interoperability touch points, and being here to integrate with and learn from CSM Betty and the talent pool surrounding him, helps me in maximizing target training time to ensure that together as a whole we are building on the commonality of warfighter capabilities to fight and win together,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Nicole Rios, 18th Force Master Chief of the Navy Reserve.
While the council addresses the standard and operational readiness, it also speaks as a unified voice for matters affecting troops to include troop readiness, morale and welfare programs, and policy.
“We are not only talking about joint training - we are talking about troops who serve the nation and have civilian careers when not in uniform.” said Coast Guard Master Chief Petty Officer William Adams, 9th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Reserve. “Each person has a different story and, as leaders, we should also ensure they are good to go in all aspects of their life.”
“I believe in people first, because without our people, we are nothing,” Betty shared. “I also believe in mission always, and our mission is joint – joint capabilities, joint training, joint force.”
Collaboration of joint senior enlisted leaders synchronizes strategic direction, especially during periods of transformation or global force posture changes.
“We should all bleed purple,” Betty concluded.
