SEMBACH, Germany — U.S. Army Capt. Brandon Mai, a general dentist assigned to the U.S. Army Dental Clinic in Stuttgart, Germany, has been selected to attend the All-Army Golf Trial Camp Sept. 7-14 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
Mai is one of 12 golfers selected for the competitive camp, which identifies the Army’s top players for national-level competition. Six participants will be selected to represent the Army at the Armed Forces Golf Championship, scheduled for Sept. 15-19 at West Point, where they will compete against golfers from the other military services.
Golf has been a significant part of Mai’s life since childhood.
“My father picked up the game from a coworker and started taking me and my siblings to hit balls at Stadium Golf Center in San Diego at age 6,” Mai said. “My mom got us started in tournaments shortly thereafter. Competitive golf taught me grit, discipline and to always strive for greatness.”
Mai grew up in Poway, California, and attended Rancho Bernardo High School. He later played two years of NCAA Division I golf at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“Competitive golf was my passion and focus throughout childhood, high school and into college,” Mai said. “I’ve traveled all over the states and internationally to compete in amateur golf tournaments growing up. This will be my first time trying out for an Army team.”
Although Mai has an extensive competitive background, he said he stepped away from the sport for more than a year before returning to the course earlier this summer.
“I didn’t play or practice any golf for over a year until earlier this summer, when a couple of the noncommissioned officers at my clinic got hooked on the game,” Mai said. “Since then, I’ve been able to practice every other weekend or so this summer.”
Mai encourages others to consider golf as either a competitive sport or lifelong hobby, citing both its personal and professional benefits.
“Golf is one of the few sports you can enjoy your entire life, and it teaches skills that carry over well to military service and life,” Mai said. “In this game, there’s a fine line between critical thinking and overthinking. You first need to learn the etiquette of golf, be patient, play well with others and have fun with it.”
