An Information Warfare Training Command San Diego mobile training team recently conducted the International Maritime Intelligence Course in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Lt. Diana Renelt, the course supervisor, and two IMIC instructors, Lts. Jennifer Niebel and George Yang, presented the five-day course July 13-18 and graduated 21 Indonesian navy officers.

“By delivering world-class intelligence training directly to our Indonesian partners in theirhomeoperational environment, we are strengthening combined warfighting capabilities and driving the interoperability required to ensure maritime domain awareness,” said Cmdr. Samantha Scarborough, IWTC San Diego commanding officer.

IMIC provides international students with fundamental intelligence skills and processes that are practiced in the U.S. Navy. Course instructors delivered 16 briefings and three practical-application exercises.

Topics cover a variety of intelligence principles, including operational intelligence, Joint Intelligence Preparation of the Operational Environment, known as JIPOE, and geopolitical briefs.

“One of our greatest strengths as the United States Navy is our partners,” Yang said. “Going to Indonesia and getting to know their culture, intelligence processes and decision-making calculus has opened my eyes to understanding what that exactly meant.”

Since 2022, IWTC San Diego has dispatched three mobile training teams to Indonesia, with more than 70 intelligence officers taking the course.

By providing IMIC in Indonesia, officials can increase interoperability and familiarity with U.S. intelligence processes for regional use or in conjunction with U.S. forces, said Master Chief Cortney Pitts, IWTC San Diego’s senior enlisted leader.

“Bringing this course overseas serves to strengthen relationships worldwide, increasing the scope drastically from what we can do within the continental United States,” he added. “We never operate in isolation—building trust and deepening maritime security cooperation with key Pacific partners ensures that our combined naval forces remain ready to defend shared security interests and preserve a free and open international maritime commons.”

IWTC San Diego, part of Center for Information Warfare Training, delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments and training sites throughout the U.S. and Japan, CIWT provides instruction for over 26,000 Navy and joint service students annually. It offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic, information systems and electronics technicians; intelligence and cyber specialists, and officers in the information warfare community.
