FORT HOOD, Texas — The 1st Cavalry Division experimented with the TyrOS application Aug. 31, 2026, at Fort Hood as part of an effort to digitize preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS), streamline maintenance procedures and support the Army's ongoing modernization efforts.
TyrOS, developed by Rune with support from the Army Applications Laboratory, GCSS-Army and Army G-46, gives units a centralized way to track and manage personnel, equipment, supplies and distribution at tactical and operational levels.
During the testing, Troopers used tablets to conduct PMCS on a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. The application stores the applicable technical manual on the device, allowing Troopers to document maintenance and record faults as they are identified.
Capt. Corey Baldyga, a member of the 1st Cavalry Division operational data team, said the experimentation showed how TyrOS could provide a digital alternative to the paper-based technical manuals traditionally used during PMCS.
"The goal is to replace the paper-based technical manuals used for PMCS for vehicles and equipment across the Army," Baldyga said. "Instead of Troopers having to write down all of the information during a PMCS, the software allows that information to be sent directly to the chain of command."
The TyrOS application goes through the TM step by step until the whole vehicle or equipment has been properly checked. Once the PMCS is complete, the Soldier can press 'submit' on the tablet, sending a notification to the mechanic to verify any faults found.
The mechanic can then forward the verified faults to a supervisor, who can order required parts through the Global Combat Support System-Army.
Beyond digitizing the process, the application could also reduce the amount of time Troopers spend conducting PMCS. When conducted properly using a physical technical manual, the traditional process can take up to two hours on a JLTV, according to Baldyga.
"We're estimating that the TyrOS application will cut down the time it takes to complete PMCS by 50%," Baldyga said.
For Troopers responsible for conducting those checks, the difference begins with how they access technical manuals and document maintenance.
Cpl. Alexander Pemberton, a human resources specialist assigned to Signal, Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, described the traditional process from a Trooper's perspective.
"We conduct PMCS every Monday for Motor Pool Monday," Pemberton said. "The normal PMCS process is going through the physical technical manual step by step, flipping through each page and then annotating each fault on the DA Form 5988-E."
After identifying a fault, the Trooper must locate a mechanic to verify it before submitting the completed DA Form 5988-E through the chain of command. TyrOS helps simplify that process.
Pemberton said the application's visual references also helped guide him through the maintenance process.
"I think the application really helped, and it's very organized," Pemberton said. "There are pictures associated with the steps, too, so that we can follow along."
Beyond the application itself, Pemberton said integrating TyrOS into routine maintenance could also provide NCOs an opportunity to train Troopers on the digital process.
"I think this is beneficial to the Army because, as an NCO, it's important that I'm out there with my Troopers, teaching them how to use the TyrOS application," Pemberton said. "It's going to save more time as Troopers get proficient in using the application."
As the Army continues to modernize, tools like TyrOS reflect a broader shift toward integrating software-based capabilities onto devices already in Troopers' hands. The Army aims to simplify how Troopers access, record and share information needed to maintain equipment and support readiness by digitizing processes traditionally completed with paper technical manuals and forms.
Pegasus Charge, the division’s overarching transformation effort, serves as the local framework for this kind of experimentation. By integrating applications like TyrOS into routine maintenance, the 1st Cavalry Division is not only improving how it cares for vehicles and equipment, it is turning the Army of the future into reality.
