HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — Service members and Department of War civilians gave their time and blood to the Armed Services Blood Program at the Domenici Fitness Center Aug. 27.
The ASBP is the official worldwide blood collection program for the U.S. military. Its mission includes collecting, transporting and distributing blood products to military locations. Since 1952, the program has collected more than 1.5 million units of blood for those in need.
Team Holloman improved its donation numbers over recent cycles of the bi-monthly event, taking in 55 total units. Each whole-blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives, with components being divided into red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
The increased contribution is a potential indicator of improved participation in the future, according to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Juan Cordero, Fort Bliss Blood Donor Center noncommissioned officer in charge. He emphasised every blood type is welcome, and increased donations will help to maintain a lasting supply for wherever and whenever it is needed.
“Being able to support all kinds of personnel and their families worldwide is one of the most satisfying parts of working in this program,” said Cordero. “When troops and their families come to donate, they’re contributing to not just one, but to all the branches in a very positive way.”
The program's impact goes beyond domestic installations. Donations support deployed service members, as well as retirees, families and veterans at worldwide military treatment locations.
Blood drives are conducted regularly at military installations to maintain a consistent supply, with the next event at Holloman expected in late October. More information about the ASBP can be found online at www.dha.mil/asbp.
