The 580th Software Engineering Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, announced yet another major win in organic software sustainment with its declaration of Initial Depot Capability for the HH-60W combat rescue helicopter’s Maintenance Data Interface, Aug. 25, 2026.
The milestone is the squadron’s second major software transition for the platform since March, further expanding the Air Force’s direct control over the CRH’s software lifecycle and representing a new era of government stewardship over the mission-critical systems that keep the rescue fleet ready to fly.
The HH-60W CRH has its own digital health tracker that measures engine temperatures and airframe stresses during combat search and rescue missions. Consisting of more than 22,000 lines of code, the MDI software acts as a translator that takes that complex data and converts it into clear, diagnostic instructions for ground crews.
By mastering in-house sustainment capabilities, the Air Force no longer has to rely on outside contractors for updates or troubleshooting. This organic capability allows Team Robins engineers to quickly deliver software fixes directly to flight line mechanics, cutting down repair times and ensuring combat rescue crews can get back into the air faster to save lives.
“Having direct access to source data empowers the 580th SWES with delivering capabilities faster than ever before,” said James Williams, 580th SWES computer scientist and MDI product owner. “Our team has assumed complete ownership and control of the HH-60W MDI source data and is equipped to support the needs of the end users.”
Following the stand-up of the helicopter’s Flight Management System, the MDI IDC marks the beginning of the Air Force’s efforts to independently maintain the aircraft’s Ground Support Suite.
The stand-up was validated through rigorous testing, including a Formal Qualification Test where the team achieved a99.74% pass rateand an original equipment manufacturer verification proving the squadron could build the code up to industry standards.
“Achieving a second major capability in the same year is a testament to the team’s momentum and engineering excellence,” said Emile Sumner, 580th SWES flight chief. “We took the lessons learned from the FMS effort and applied them to the MDI stand-up, accelerating the process. The team’s ability to master a new system, prove equivalency and achieve a near-perfect test score showcases the immediate impact of the Air Force’s investment in this organic depot.”
Owning the software gives the Air Force the flexibility to rapidly test and deploy future upgrades directly to the field without extended development delays.
“Following so quickly on the heels of our FMS success, this declaration for the Maintenance Data Interface proves our model is not only effective but repeatable. We are systematically taking control of the key software components for this weapon system,” said William Zieg, 580th SWES director. “With our outstanding team, our state-of-the-art lab and our strong program office partnership, we are building a truly organic capability that ensures the Combat Rescue Helicopter fleet maintains its decisive edge for years to come.”
