“Competition and camaraderie are my favorite parts of Best Warrior. We’re all competitive, but we’re also a team. We study together, help each other, and push one another to be better,” says U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Brock Mudge, an infantryman with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, Washington Army National Guard, competing in the Region VI Best Warrior Competition.

Mudge joined the National Guard 11 years ago seeking structure, purpose, and an opportunity to serve while maintaining his civilian career and family life. He credits the support of his wife and children with helping him balance both responsibilities throughout his military career. Through the competition, Mudge hopes to identify new strengths and weaknesses while continuing to challenge himself as a Soldier and leader. He says competing alongside Soldiers from across Region VI has reinforced the value of teamwork, with competitors sharing knowledge and helping one another succeed despite the competitive environment.

"Everybody studied together. We all pulled out study material. We wanted to make sure everybody was at the top of their game so that the competition was real."

Mudge reflected on the National Guard’s role supporting his local community following a tragic industrial accident in Washington, highlighting the Guard’s commitment to serving others during times of need. His dedication to duty reflects his commitment to personal growth, service, and leading by example for his family, fellow Soldiers, and community.
