“My favorite part so far has been the community and getting to know one another. Having the opportunity to ask where people are from, where they’ve been, and what they hope to do helps build a stronger Army,” says U.S. Army Sgt. William Lauseng, a carpentry and masonry specialist with the 155th Engineer Company, South Dakota Army National Guard, competing in the Region VI Best Warrior Competition.
Lauseng joined the National Guard seven years ago to serve his nation while taking advantage of the educational and professional opportunities military service provides. He credits the Guard with helping him develop confidence, integrity, and a commitment to serving others, values that continue to shape both his military and civilian life. Through the Best Warrior Competition, Lauseng hopes to expand his proficiency in Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills while becoming a more well-rounded and capable Soldier. He says competing alongside Soldiers from other states has been eye-opening, providing opportunities to learn from different training experiences while building relationships across the region.
“Even though it's an individual competition, we were able to work together, train each other up, and just see how far we could go.”
Lauseng takes pride in representing South Dakota and believes the competition demonstrates how Soldiers from different backgrounds can come together to strengthen the force. His dedication to integrity and selfless service reflects his commitment to strengthening his community, supporting his fellow Soldiers, and continually growing as a leader.
