“I think it’s an honor to serve with the Alaska National Guard,” says U.S. Army Spc. John Pingayak, Alpha Company, 49th Missile Defense Battalion, Ground Based Interceptor Security Company, Alaska Army National Guard, competing in the Region VI Best Warrior Competition.
Pingayak, from Chevak, Alaska, joined the National Guard two and a half years ago seeking new opportunities, personal growth, and a path beyond a traditional civilian career. Since enlisting, he has developed greater discipline, accountability, and professionalism that continue to positively influence his civilian life.
Through the Best Warrior Competition, Pingayak hopes to strengthen his Soldier skills, learn new techniques from fellow competitors, and improve his ability to perform under pressure. He enjoys meeting Soldiers from across the country and learning about the similarities and differences between their states and experiences.
"One of my favorite parts of the competition has been meeting Soldiers from different states and learning how they do things compared to how we do them in Alaska."
Pingayak considers supporting remote Alaskan communities by delivering food and supplies via UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his military career, witnessing firsthand the impact the National Guard has on communities across the state. His commitment to honor reflects his dedication to serving others and supporting fellow Alaskans when they need it most.
