“I hope to find a deeper side of myself that I haven’t been able to see yet and come out on top in the end,” says U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Richard Tangen, a bridge crewmember with the 957th Engineer Company, North Dakota Army National Guard, competing in the Region VI Best Warrior Competition.
Tangen joined the National Guard seven years ago to serve his community, honor family members who served before him, and pursue educational opportunities. Throughout his military career, he has built strong relationships within his community and workplace while developing the values of integrity, loyalty, and courage. Tangen enjoys the challenge of competition and views it as an opportunity to test his skills alongside some of the National Guard’s top Soldiers. He says competing against Soldiers from across Region VI has been both humbling and motivating.
“Here at this competition, everyone wants to be here, and everyone wants to win.”
He takes pride in representing North Dakota and the 957th Engineer Company while continuing to grow as a Soldier and leader. Tangen considers attending Air Assault School at Fort Benning, Georgia, one of the highlights of his military career, where he learned sling load operations and rappelling while training alongside Soldiers from across the Army. His dedication to duty reflects his commitment to personal growth, service, and excellence.
