FUERTE BUCHANAN, PUERTO RICO — Celebrity chef and global culinary mentor Marc Cummings visited Puerto Rico Aug. 14–18 to support a series of engagements aimed at improving food service capabilities across the joint force. His weeklong mentorship included hands-on collaboration with military culinary teams and youth-focused demonstrations designed to strengthen readiness, morale and community connection through food.

During the visit, Cummings spent time at Fort Buchanan, working closely with the installation’s Community Club culinary team to enhance food service skills and reinforce the role of quality nutrition in warfighter readiness.

“Fort Buchanan is an amazing base. Everyone seems like a family, which is really important,” he said. “Everyone greets and says hello, and the Soldiers seem to be smiling.”

He also visited Child and Youth Services, introducing military dependents to culinary creativity, basic cooking techniques and the idea that food can connect cultures, families and communities. The demonstrations gave young learners a rare opportunity to learn from a world-class chef.

Cummings said he appreciated the warm welcome he received.

“I really feel that it’s a Puerto Rican community. Puerto Ricans are very good with each other. They’re very close with each other, and I felt very welcome.”

Cummings also mentored culinary specialists from the Army Reserve, Marine Corps and Air Force during sessions at the former Naval Base Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba. He provided guidance shaped by international expertise and modern techniques, inspiring creativity and confidence across all service branches.

In each interaction, Cummings connected the culinary arts with everyday life.

“Cooking is creating, and when you see something in the kitchen and look at a recipe, what you’re really doing is using your mind to create it,” he said. “But it’s really no different in life. Every morning we wake up, we have a plan, and we execute it.”

Cummings’ visit demonstrated how culinary excellence supports mission success by elevating nutrition, enhancing morale and reinforcing community readiness across the joint force.
