Lost in 1968, Vietnam War Hero Returns to Florida for Final Rest
FORT KNOX, Ky. – The remains of U.S. Army Pfc. Robert E. Tyner, 20, of Jacksonville, Florida, killed during the Vietnam War, will be interred Aug. 28, at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in his hometown. Services and interment are being coordinated by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home.
On Feb. 19, 1968, Tyner was a patient undergoing medical evacuation aboard a CH-53A Sea Stallion helicopter, which was also carrying a five-member crew and six passengers, when the aircraft crashed.
On June 21, 1968 a U.S. Marine Corps Search and Rescue team located the crash site but was unable to conclusively determine the individual identities of the recovered, comingled human remains of the individuals aboard the aircraft. The recovered remains were interred in a group burial on Sept. 10, 1968 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
In January 1993 and May 2000 further remains were recovered from the crash site, some of which were identified as Tyner’s.
U.S. Army Human Resources Command’s Past Conflict Repatriations Branch plays a vital role in the process of identifying, locating and contacting subsequent generation family members of Soldiers missing or killed in action during WWII and the Korean War to positively identify previously undiscovered or unknown remains.
