BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Surrounded by family, friends, and fellow Service members atop the Hill at Western Kentucky University, Col. Michael Armstrong was promoted to the rank of brigadier general Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026.
Armstrong, an Army National Guard aviator and leader, received federal recognition and appointment to brigadier general effective July 16, 2026. His career spans leadership roles at every echelon, including command of the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade (TAB); Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 63rd TAB; the 751st Troop Command; and Company B, 2nd Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment.
A senior aviator with more than 600 combat flight hours in the OH-58 Kiowa, UH-60 Black Hawk, and UH-72 Lakota helicopters, Armstrong previously served as the state Army aviation officer and commander of Task Force Aviation for U.S. Northern Command, as well as deputy commander of the 244th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade during Operation Inherent Resolve.
According to Maj. Gen. Haldane B. Lamberton, the adjutant general of Kentucky, slightly more than 1 percent of colonels are selected for promotion to general officer.
“I'm glad to have you on board as General Armstrong, and I believe you fit right in with a quality group of the leadership that we've got here in the organization,” Lamberton said. “And my belief, Gretchen, Anna, and Emma, is that we're a better organization as a result of your dad, your husband.”
Armstrong’s daughters, Anna and Emma, pinned the one-star insignia onto the shoulders of their father’s Army Green Service Uniform.
“Stars on my shoulders won't make me a better leader,” Armstrong said following the pinning. “What matters is what I do with the responsibility that comes with that.”
Armstrong reaffirmed his leadership philosophy, emphasizing that command is a privilege built on maintaining standards, listening, and taking care of Soldiers.
“At the end of the next chapter, I hope that people I served with don't remember me because of the stars on my shoulders,” Armstrong said. “I hope they remember me as someone who served them well, made them better, and left the organization stronger than when I found it.”
Armstrong chose WKU as the backdrop for his promotion ceremony to honor where his military career began when he was commissioned through the university’s Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program in 2001.
“WKU is where my officer career began. It was where I learned the fundamentals of leadership, discipline, teamwork, and service,” Armstrong said. “The ROTC cadre invested in me. They challenged me and helped me prepare for the responsibilities that came with becoming an Army officer.”
For Armstrong, returning to campus was equally personal.
“When I think about WKU, I don't just think about ROTC or the Army. I think about some of the most important memories of my life,” he said. “This is where I met Gretchen, a beautiful young woman who eventually became my wife, my best friend, and the person who would stand beside me through every chapter of this journey.”
