NUWC Division, Keyport returning intern supports range data management

Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport

Gavin Harmon, a rising senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, is spending his second summer as an intern at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Keyport through the Department of War’s Test Resource Management Center internship program.     Harmon is studying computer science and is currently interning as a software developer for the Range Data Management System. His work at NUWC Division, Keyport involves implementing new features, fixing bugs and consulting on a database upgrade.    For his current project, Harmon is prototyping and stress-testing software to see how it performs under different conditions to ensure the programs function reliably for end users.    "The biggest impact that Gavin had for me through both summers was educating me on what constitutes good software engineering," said Daniel Kim, a project manager in NUWC Division, Keyport’s Test Resources Engineering and Planning Division who serves as Harmon’s mentor. "He brought a fresh, outside perspective which was helpful in determining areas where we could keep improving as a team.”    A Bel Air, Maryland native, Harmon previously worked as a software engineer for a marketing startup. Last year, he completed his first Keyport internship, during which he began working on the same range software project he supports today and proved himself as a highly capable software engineer.    Harmon expects to finish his undergraduate degree next year, after which he hopes to pursue a career in the defense industry.    "Seeing things that I made last year being used on the ranges by real range technicians and officers is crazy to me," said Harmon. "What really gets me out of bed every morning is knowing what I'm doing has an impact on something I care about."
