Years of New Hampshire military history are being preserved through restoration efforts at the historic New Hampshire Army National Guard Building B in Concord. Contractors and Soldiers are working to restore the building while ensuring it remains a functional symbol of service for future generations. Originally constructed in 1886, Building B, historically known as the Arsenal, was the first National Guard facility in New Hampshire. It has since been transformed into a museum housing artifacts and exhibits highlighting the accomplishments of NHARNG units. The museum also traces the organization’s lineage from colonial-era militias to modern military operations. “This is a significant undertaking that will preserve the structural integrity and historical character of this landmark for generations to come,” said Staff Sgt. Erik Hauck, a facility operations specialist with the NHARNG Construction and Facilities Management Office. “Given the building’s rich history and importance to our organization, we want to ensure we are taking the best care of it.” The museum features historic uniforms and equipment dating to 1886, as well as unit guidons, ribbons and other items recognizing unit accomplishments. Historical documents, records, visual displays and conceptual designs illustrate the state’s military history. Each restored window, repaired masonry joint and preserved architectural detail reflects the building’s enduring legacy. For more than a century, Building B supported the New Hampshire State Militia and the NHARNG, including serving as a facility for storing weapons, ammunition and supplies. Lester Baker of ProPoint Restoration LLC and his team are working to balance historic preservation with the building’s continued use. The team is focused on maintaining the architectural integrity that has defined the Arsenal since the 19th century. Building B is more than a historic brick structure. It represents the origins and evolution of military readiness in the New Hampshire National Guard. “This restoration highlights the commitment to preserving our heritage,” Hauck said. “It also showcases the skilled craftsmanship involved in maintaining such a vital piece of our history.”
