The White Sands Missile Range’s Facility Planning Committee met on Aug. 18, 2026, in the evening to share input on the new White Sands School planned for the military range. Colleen Martinez, President of Visions in Planning, hosted the meeting; she has also designed other schools in the Las Cruces Public School District. The meeting marks the first of three sessions designed to gather ideas from families, staff, and local residents about the future of White Sands School.

Discussions included funding constraints, anticipated demographic changes, and the importance of creating a 21st-century learning environment. Committee members are encouraged to attend and remain involved through all three sessions to ensure their voices are reflected in the final design.

Martinez emphasized the importance of building "Future Proof Infrastructure," noting that the new school must serve students for the next 50 years or more. She said the facility should be adaptable and able to accommodate rapid technology changes, ensuring students have access to evolving digital tools and learning environments that prepare them for tomorrow's workplaces.

“We need to have general use areas that can be easily changed. Maybe it's an art space for ten years, and then it becomes something else for the next ten years,” said Martinez. “We want spaces that can adapt and change over time.”

The committee did a group exercise focusing on vision and goals for the future school. A few of the ideas for the school involved:

    • School safety and access control
    • Spaces for storage
    • Large open classrooms and focus rooms for students who may feel overwhelmed
    • Easy navigation for new students
    • Colorful welcoming environment
    • More power sources
    • Classroom restrooms for younger grades
    • Meeting areas for groups
    • Climate control

White Sands School is unique within the district for serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and for its focus on the needs of military families stationed at the base. Organizers emphasized the importance of community feedback in shaping the educational specifications, vision, and goals for the new facility, which will replace the existing White Sands School built in 1952.

The next two planning meetings are scheduled for Sept. 3 and 23 at White Sands School.
