This year, CPE CBRND’s Joint Project Manager for CBRN Integrated Early Warning (JPM CBRN IEW) reached a Milestone B decision for the Vehicle Integrated Platform Enhanced RADIAC (VIPER) technology. Originally developed by the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, VIPER is a next-generation radiation detection and monitoring system that can be integrated into U.S. Army ground and aviation platforms.
VIPER's primary mission is to protect platform crews and equipment from unavoidable radiological and nuclear hazards. Warfighters will use VIPER to detect potential radiological sources and to monitor health and safety.
The Milestone B decision officially launches VIPER as a Program of Record and moves it into the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase. During this phase, JPM CBRN IEW will develop, build, test and evaluate the VIPER technology to verify that all operational and implied requirements are met to support production, development and sustainment decisions. This is a great step forward in getting VIPER into warfighters' hands.
