TUCSON, Ariz. – Leaders from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base convened at a commander’s offsite meeting at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, Aug. 13, 2026.

U.S. Air Force Col. Jose Cabrera, 355th Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Kelvin Hatcher, 355th Wing command chief, met with leaders from units across DM to discuss the future of the installation and how to build DM Airmen’s resiliency and improve leadership strategies among the attendees.

"There is a significant amount of transformation happening at Davis-Monthan,” Cabrera said. “This offsite served as a vital forum to align our leadership teams on our long-term Wing and installation strategy. It provided a collaborative space for commanders to synchronize efforts, address operational constraints, and ensure our units are collectively postured for future mission success."

The installation improvements are designed to improve access to amenities and foster a deeper sense of community among base residents.

"We are actively executing targeted quality-of-life initiatives to support our Airmen and their families,” Cabrera said. “Current projects range from establishing an indoor recreational space for base housing families to developing a modern community center for our dormitory residents. Our goal is to cultivate a resilient, connected community where our people can thrive."

Desireé Reed-Francois, U of A athletics director, spoke to the group on the topic of leadership and shared lessons she learned over the course of her career.

“Desireé Reed-Francois delivered a powerful, candid presentation on resilient leadership, drawing from her extensive career to highlight how we can transform professional challenges into growth opportunities,” Hatcher said. “Her core message, ‘that genuine care for our people is the foundation of effective leadership’, directly reinforces our commitment to leading our Airmen with empathy and purpose."

As Davis-Monthan continues to evolve, its leaders emphasized that preparing for the future requires more than mission readiness, it requires investing in Airmen, developing resilient leaders and strengthening the relationships that connect the installation to the Tucson community.
