Defense acquisition discussions often focus on prime contractors and complete weapon systems, but military readiness depends on an extensive network of subcontractors, lower-tier suppliers and the skilled professionals who manufacture the components that make those systems possible.
Lt. Col. Spencer Farmer, Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor program manager, recently visited Cristek in North Billerica, Massachusetts, to meet with employees supporting the LTAMDS industrial base.
During the site visit, Farmer connected the work taking place on the manufacturing floor to the Soldiers who ultimately depend on the system in the field. He discussed the technical coordination and rigorous standards required to produce advanced defense systems while emphasizing that every component contributes to the reliability and performance of the overall capability.
His message was simple: Every component matters.
Even foundational components such as cables and interconnects contribute to the performance and reliability of complex air and missile defense systems. The quality and precision provided by suppliers throughout the industrial base ultimately support the Soldiers who rely on those systems to accomplish their missions.
Cristek leaders said hearing that connection directly from the program manager reinforced for employees the importance of their work and the role they play in supporting Army readiness and national defense.
By walking the manufacturing floor and sharing the operational perspective, acquisition leaders can help strengthen the connection between the industrial base and the warfighter. When employees understand how their individual contributions support the mission, they gain a clearer understanding of their role in delivering capabilities Soldiers can depend on.
That connection — from the manufacturing floor to the tactical edge — helps strengthen the Army's industrial base and reinforces the shared commitment required to deliver reliable capabilities to the warfighter.
