PORTFOLIO ACQUISITION EXECUTIVE AVIATION, Patuxent River, MD. — To sharpen the Joint Force’s competitive edge in contested maritime environments, Naval Aviation achieved a vital milestone in advancing decision superiority this May, successfully holding the Critical Design Review for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Block II upgrade.

Representing the next evolution of Delta System Software Configuration 6 (DSSC-6), the Block II upgrade delivers the software foundation for rapid capability insertion. This modernization introduces state-of-the-art cockpit architecture, increased computing power, an Open Mission Systems framework and robust cybersecurity. Together, these capabilities ensure the E-2D remains the premier node for airborne command and control, providing the resilient, lethal edge required to secure maritime dominance.

The Block II infrastructure improvements translate into greater battle force resiliency against complex, emerging threats. By integrating an Open Mission Systems architecture, the program resolves current and future parts obsolescence and enables rapid, non-proprietary technology insertion. This approach actively drives acquisition velocity, supercharges the industrial base, and delivers next-generation capability to the warfighter at the speed of relevance. Furthermore, the modernized cockpit and flight systems will significantly reduce pilot workload and elevate situational awareness, allowing crews to focus on complex battlespace management.

The E-2/C-2 Airborne Command & Control Systems Program Office (PMA-231) with industry partner Northrop Grumman convened a technical review board to rigorously assess the finalized system Product baseline. The successful Block II CDR event officially transitions the upgrade program out of the design phase and into physical aircraft retrofits and flight-testing phases.

Flight tests of the Block II configured E-2D are scheduled for fiscal year 2029.

PMA-231 manages the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and E-2C Hawkeye throughout their lifecycles. By combining technical expertise with strategic sustainment, this workforce provides the U.S. Navy with premier airborne early warning, command and control, and logistics support to a more decisive and ready fleet.
