FORT STEWART, Ga.— In a ceremony steeped in military tradition, Command Sgt. Maj. Steve Tocco formally assumed responsibility as the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield senior enlisted leader at the Main Post Chapel here Aug. 14.
Standing before peers, members of the garrison workforce, and 3rd Infantry Division leaders, Tocco accepted the garrison colors, signaling his entry into a role dedicated to supporting the thousands of Soldiers, families, and civilians who call the installation home.
“Today is a momentous day for the installation,” said Col. Gabe Weaver, the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield garrison commander. “The garrison command sergeant major is the keeper of our standards, the voice of our Soldiers and families, and the bedrock of our installation support.”
He added Tocco is the right man at the right time.
During Tocco’s remarks, he stated the garrison mission is simple to define.
“We deliver peace of mind,” he said. “When our Soldiers answer the Nation’s call to deploy, they cannot be distracted by worries at home. They must know with absolute certainty their families are safe and supported, their housing is secure, and their childcare is robust and reliable.”
Tocco is no stranger to 3ID, but this is his first tour on Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. He served at Fort Benning, Georgia with 3rd Brigade, 3ID from 2001-2006, and added he knows the high operational tempo of the Marne Division.
Tocco has multiple operational and combat deployments to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Korea. He previously served as the battalion senior enlisted leader for the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry (Opposing Forces) at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels, Germany.
As the new garrison senior enlisted leader for Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, Tocco encourages Soldiers and their families to reach out to him directly.
“Fort Stewart has a rich history, an extremely powerful reputation across the Army,” Tocco said. "Taking care of Soldiers and their families is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I enjoy being able to provide solutions to problems and take care of things for Soldiers and their families.”
The ceremony concluded with a nod to 3ID's proud identity, reflecting the resilient, get-it-done spirit of the Coastal Georgia installation, “Not fancy, just tough.”
“I’m proud to serve as your garrison command sergeant major and be a part of this team, let’s get to work,” Tocco said.
