Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) John Perryman and Ombudsman-at-Large Angie Perryman concluded a four-day fleet engagement across Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola and Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West Aug. 6.
While MCPON focused on operational readiness through engagements with Sailors, students, instructors and command leadership, the Ombudsman-at-Large met with support professionals to better understand the programs and services that contribute to family readiness. Together, the engagements provided a broader look at conditions affecting Sailors and families at two installations with very different missions and challenges.
"The purpose of this visit is simple: to spend time with Sailors and their families, hear their perspectives firsthand, and better understand what they're experiencing,” said MCPON Perryman.
“Those conversations are invaluable because they help ensure our efforts remain focused on building ready Sailors, supporting ready families, and maintaining a ready Fleet."
Pensacola served as the first stop, where MCPON Perryman met with leaders across the training pipeline responsible for developing the Fleet’s next generation of warfighters. He examined how technical training, professional standards and physical readiness prepare Sailors for the demands of operational service.
Discussions with Naval Education and Training Command and Center for Information Warfare Training leadership focused on continued investment in technical training and development for Sailors.
He also addressed student Sailors during an all-hands call, met with installation and tenant command leadership, toured barracks, family housing and support facilities, and participated in small-group discussions with Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff. The engagement concluded in Key West, where conversations shifted from preparing Sailors for the Fleet to sustaining them throughout operational service.
The Fleet visit concluded in Key West, shifting the focus from preparing Sailors for the Fleet to the conditions that sustain them throughout operational service.
“In Pensacola, we saw Sailors in the training pipeline building the skills and confidence they’ll carry throughout their careers,” said MCPON Perryman. “In Key West, we saw what it takes for our Sailors and families to live and serve in a remote location while supporting the Fleet every day. My goal is to listen, learn and better understand how we can continue removing barriers, supporting our Sailors and families, and strengthening readiness at every stage of that journey."
Throughout the visits, the Ombudsman-at-Large met with command Ombudsmen, Fleet and Family Support Center personnel, Child Development Center staff, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society representatives, housing professionals and other installation partners to better understand how families access support, where gaps remain and how effectively information is reaching them.
Families raised concerns about housing affordability and conditions, cost of living, childcare, permanent change of station challenges and sponsor programs. In Key West, discussions also examined how the installation’s geographic isolation affects access to services and resources, particularly during hurricane season. The conversations highlighted the importance of strong command-family communication and ensuring families know where to turn before challenges become crises.
“Service is a family commitment, and families today look different for everyone,” said Angie Perryman. “Every deployment, every move and every challenge is a shared experience. Whether it’s a spouse, parent, child or someone else standing behind our Sailors, making sure they have the support they need is part of taking care of our Sailors.”
The perspectives gathered in Pensacola and Key West will help inform continued discussions with Navy leadership on the policies, programs and resources affecting Sailors and families across the Fleet.
