FORT STEWART, Ga. — For Soldiers at Fort Stewart, finding a meal during the duty day can be as simple as walking to a dining facility, trying the installation’s newest dining option Flexible Eating and Expanded Dining (FEED) or eating at the new food truck plaza.
Fort Stewart and Army & Air Force Exchange Service celebrated the official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony August 13.
The growing number of choices gives 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers the flexibility to find food that fits their schedules, preferences and missions, while remaining on post.
For Spc. Wyatt Hagan, an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, multiple selections make eating on post more convenient.
“Having different options is good for Soldiers because everybody doesn’t want the same thing every day,” Hagan said. “Having the DFAC, food trucks and FEED gives us more variety and makes it easier to find something that works for us.”
This flexibility can be especially important for Soldiers whose days are filled with training, motor pool operations and other mission requirements.
Spc. Junior Avala, a tanker assigned to 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, said having food available close to where Soldiers work can save valuable time.
“When you’re coming back from training or working in the motor pool, convenience is important,” Avala said. “Having food options closer to where Soldiers are working saves time and gives us more choices instead of having to leave post or wait until later to eat.”
Food trucks have become an important part of Fort Stewart’s dining environment, giving Soldiers access to meals beyond what is traditionally available at a dining facility. For Daniel Griffin, owner of The Yellow Bee food truck and a former Soldier, serving the military community is also a way to give back.
“It gives them more variety, and for us to give them something else to fall back on, it gives them more convenience,” Griffin said. “I was a prior Soldier, and we didn’t have these options. So, to help benefit the next generation of Soldiers by providing food truck services, it’s a way to give back.”
Griffin also sees the dining options as a boost to Soldier morale.
“This is definitely a morale booster for Fort Stewart Soldiers,” Griffin said. “Eating the same things on post can force you to go off post and find other things to eat, and that can be draining. Being flexible and giving Soldiers more options incentivizes them while also allowing them to stay on post.”
The variety available at Fort Stewart also reaches across different cultures and cuisines.
Angela Crowell, service business manager for Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, said food trucks provide Soldiers with an opportunity to experience food from around the world while serving at home stations.
“It provides variety,” Crowell said. “Our Soldiers have been stationed all around the world, so we bring them food trucks from all around the world. We bring African, Vietnamese, Jamaican, German and Asian food trucks—and, best of all, Southern cooking.”
For Crowell, the choices are about more than simply having different meals available. They can provide Soldiers with something familiar while they are away from home.
“It gives them a choice,” Crowell said. “Having different options gives Soldiers the comfort of sometimes having a taste of home.”
Providing Soldiers with convenient access to quality food is part of the installation’s larger quality-of-life effort. By offering traditional dining facilities alongside food trucks and FEED, Fort Stewart gives Soldiers the ability to choose what works best for them.
Ultimately, the variety of dining options at Fort Stewart gives Soldiers something simple but valuable: choice. Whether they want a familiar meal from the DFAC, something from a food truck or a new option from FEED, Soldiers have more opportunities to find food that fits their day while remaining focused on the mission.
