The space syndicate is part of the exercise’s broader effort to help BDF planners integrate capabilities across multiple domains. “The syndicate is focused on providing BDF personnel with a foundational understanding of the space domain and the capabilities available to support their planning efforts,” said S7/9 Director, United States Space Forces Europe and Africa Lt. Col. Devin Zufelt.
A key objective is helping BDF planners understand how space capabilities can be incorporated into operational planning and decision making. “When you talk about this in a military perspective, you hear the words ISR, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance,” said National Security Space Institute Instructor, Mr. Joe Spegele.
“That implies that somebody has looked at the surveillance and reconnaissance products and made actionable information from it. The ISR can be from an unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, a drone or there are lots of other ways we can collect useful information from space.”
By translating space-based information into useful products and communicating its relevance to decision-makers, planners can help incorporate the space domain into broader military operations. “I did not know much about this information before today,” said a pilot with the Botswana Defence Force, Maj. Aobakwe Tsimakwane. “Learning about what is available and how we can use it helps us.”
The training highlights the growing importance of space capabilities to modern military operations and the value of developing shared understanding between partner forces. “Space provides a multi-domain approach to solve a wide variety of problems, using capabilities that save time, money, and most importantly lives,” said Zufelt.
