JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – All military ID cardholders, including transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses and caregivers, are welcome to participate Sept. 2 and 3 in the free Hiring Our Heroes Joint Base Lewis-McChord Career Summit, a two-day series of job search-related events, held at various JBLM locations.
LEARN ABOUT THE SUMMIT
Planners are aiming for 1,000 participants for the 13th annual hiring summit, which will include about 200 employers from across the nation, said Christopher Gentz, transition services manager for JBLM’s Directorate of Human Resources.
On Sept. 2, military spouse workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at American Lake Conference Center, Lewis North, followed by a networking reception in the same location between 5 and 7 p.m.
Then, on Sept. 3, transition workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Carey Theater, Lewis Main, and a hiring fair will take place from 1:30-4 p.m. at Hangar 9, McChord Field.
REGISTER FOR THE SUMMIT
“Pre-registration is key, because it unlocks the ability to communicate with the employers that we have attending,” Gentz said, adding that pre-registrants will receive employers’ points of contact and can then submit targeted resumes early.
Additionally, registration will be available at the door, but the process for pre-registered participants will be quicker and smoother, he said.

PREPARE FOR THE SUMMIT
After registering, Gentz recommends that summit participants research their top four or five participating companies, compile and send questions to the companies’ representatives, and give those representatives the chance to provide feedback.
“That way, if you get into a hiring panel, you move forward with … that inside knowledge” regarding what they’re looking for and “what your role might be, so that you have a better overall outlook on what that opportunity might look like, rather than walking into a situation blindly,” Gentz said.
For participants who are further away from their transition windows or just beginning their job searches, Gentz recommends they “come into it with a very businesslike approach and investigate what is out there.”
“Think about what you want to do, and then invest in it,” he said. “Look into what it is you need to have in your back pocket in order to be successful in the area, whether it be certification, additional training, or maybe just how you need to approach your resume when you're ready to pursue that opportunity.”
Ten higher education institutions will be represented at the hiring fair on Sept. 3, too, “because we know that some people will go the higher-education route before going to work,” Gentz said.
Frank Handoe, JBLM deputy transition services manager, said attendees are encouraged to prepare for the Sept. 3 hiring fair specifically by participating in the summit’s other events, including the military spouse and transition workshops and the networking reception.
