JOINT BASE LINDSEY GRAHAM, S.C. – Secretary of War Pete Hegseth officially renamed Joint Base Charleston to Joint Base Lindsey Graham during a ceremony Aug. 10, 2026, honoring the legacy of the late U.S. Senator Lindsey O. Graham and his decades of military and public service.
U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and U.S. Sen. Darline Graham attended the ceremony, which marked the official unveiling of the installation’s new name.
“Senator Lindsey Graham dedicated his life to serving this state and serving the armed forces of the United States,” Hegseth said. “He knew the timeless truth that to ensure peace, we must be prepared for war. Protect your people, protect your state, protect your sovereignty, or you will lose it to someone else who is willing to take it from you.”
Graham served 33 years in the U.S. Air Force, including active-duty Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve service, before retiring as a colonel in 2015. Throughout his career in Congress, Graham remained a strong advocate for the installation and South Carolina’s military community, helping secure hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding for infrastructure and aviation-related projects.
“As we unveil this new sign today, it's much more than a marker of our gates,” said U.S. Air Force Col. K. Michael Shirley II, Joint Base Lindsey Graham and 628th Air Base Wing commander. “It will serve as a daily reminder to every Sailor, Airman, Marine, Soldier, Guardian, and civilian contractor that their mission is vital and their safety is prioritized, and their sacrifice is valued by our highest level of government.”
While the installation looks to the future under a new name, its core mission of the installation remains unchanged: Rapid Global Mobility – Anytime, Anywhere.
