The Commander of the 908th Operations Group, Col. Derek Shehee, bestowed command of the 703rd Helicopter Squadron to Lt. Col. Kyle Wamser during an assumption of command ceremony Friday, July 31, 2026, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
Shehee spoke first, highlighting how Wamser was the right choice for the job.
“His was the first name that came to mind,” said Shehee. “He is one of the best instructor pilots in the Air Force.”
Wamser came to the 908th in September 2022, first as the operations officer for the wing’s program integration office, at the forefront of the wing’s conversion from a C-130 tactical airlift mission to the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter formal training mission.
Then Wamser moved over to the 908th OG as the group’s chief of standardization and evaluations and a Grey Wolf evaluator pilot, prior to taking command of the 703rd.
After assuming command, Wamser thanked all in attendance and thanked Shehee for the opportunity. He then turned his focus to the 703rd HS, highlighting all they have accomplished so far. “It has been said by many leaders that this has been the most difficult mission change in the Air Force Reserve Command,” said Wamser. “Your dedication and professionalism have laid the foundation for an outstanding formal training unit for years to come.”
Wamser closed by highlighting his feelings in the moment.
“I am humbled and honored to be your commander.”
