HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – U.S. Air Force Academy cadets traded the classroom for the flightline this summer, experiencing firsthand how the 1st Special Operations Wing projects global combat power during a two-week immersion from July 13-29, 2026.
The visit, part of the Academy’s annual Operations Air Force program since 2019, aims to transition cadets from academic theory and directly into active operational environments.
The 1st SOW used the opportunity to highlight that special operations success relies on a seamless network of tactical execution and strong support systems.
“I wanted them to see first-hand how the 1st SOW prepares and continues to be ready to execute our high-stakes mission while at the same time showcasing that being ‘high-tempo’ is not something to be afraid of,” said the project officer for the tour assigned to the 1st SOW. “Every aspect of our immersion revolved around the uniqueness of what we do here at Hurlburt Field. Beyond displaying our aircraft and tactical assets, we deliberately highlighted the multitude of resources available to take care of our people.”
While tactical roles like aviation and special warfare are the visible face of operations, the visit showcased the essential support network required to get assets off the ground. By witnessing this integration, the cadets gained a broader perspective and a stronger appreciation for the Airmen who protect and sustain the mission.
“Regardless of the Air Force Specialty Code they go into, authentic leadership starts with just being genuine and building connections,” said the project officer. “My advice to them is to be themselves and get to know the people they lead.”
The program’s early exposure to command dynamics demonstrates the importance of forging real connections alongside maintaining authority. By observing AFSOC leaders, the cadets learned that building trust and understanding a team's diverse strengths is essential to fostering operational resilience across the force.
“We had the pleasure of speaking with the wing commander, Col. [Mark] Hamilton, and he really made me appreciate the people aspect of the job,” said USAFA cadet Brody Manser. “He had some really sound advice as far as taking care of your people, and how character and confidence is pivotal in leading your own. That really stuck with me, and regardless of where I end up, I’ll carry his words with me.”
During their visit to Hurlburt Field, the future officers were given examples and tools for leading a joint force and delivering specialized airpower in defense of the nation. As they return to the Academy to commission, the cadets carry 1st SOW insights to shape the foundation for their future leadership styles.
