    AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- An active-duty Airman assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Aviano Air Base, Italy, was pronounced dead at Lake Barcis, Italy, August 8, 2026.

    Following the next-of-kin notification, the Airman has been identified as Airman 1st Class Malachi Robinson, 24. Robinson served as a Weapons Loader with the 555th Aircraft Maintenance Unit Weapons section assigned to the 31st AMXS. Robinson was swimming at Lake Barcis when he failed to surface and was reported missing Saturday evening. His body was recovered by local authorities, and he was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m.

    “We extend our deepest condolences to Malachi’s family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Col. Beau Diers, 31st Fighter Wing commander. “Our hearts are with everyone affected by his loss, and we remain committed to supporting our Airmen and their families as we mourn together. We appreciate the response and actions by our Italian partners in attempting to locate Malachi and save his life.”

    The 31st Fighter Wing is supporting Italian authorities as they continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Airman’s death.
