GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Preparing the nation's military to meet tomorrow's challenges requires more than classrooms; it demands realistic training, modern technology and strong partnerships between military leaders and elected officials.
That was the focus as Texas State Sen. Charles Perry, District 28, and Texas State Rep. Drew Darby, House District 72, visited Aug. 5, to gain a firsthand understanding of how the 17th Training Wing develops mission-ready service members while supporting the local community.
Throughout the visit, installation leaders demonstrated how Goodfellow equips Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Guardians, Coast Guardsmen and international partners with the specialized skills needed to succeed in today's operational environment.
Discussions centered on the installation's role in strengthening national defense through intelligence, fire protection and emergency services training.
Wing leaders also met with the delegation and local civic leaders to discuss the installation's priorities, regional partnerships and future requirements.
The conversations reinforced the importance of collaboration between military and community leaders to ensure Goodfellow remains positioned to meet evolving national security demands.
The group observed students participating in a live fire suppression training scenario at the Louis F. Garland Department of War Fire Academy, demonstrating how realistic training develops the skills necessary to protect personnel, infrastructure and mission-critical resources.
The visit continued at the 17th Training Support Squadron's Instructional Technology Unit, where the delegation explored how innovative instructional tools enhance learning and increase student readiness.
By integrating technology into military education, the unit helps prepare service members for increasingly complex operational environments with modern learning styles.
Visits like these provide policymakers with a firsthand understanding of how investments in military training, infrastructure and people translate into a more capable Joint Force.
By connecting elected leaders directly with the Airmen and mission at Goodfellow, the 17th TRW strengthens the partnerships that help ensure the installation remains ready to train the next generation of warfighters.
