    Story by Sgt. Keyra Moolenaar

    Joint Task Force DC

For many service members enlisting after high school, a search for direction often leads to a discovered purpose. When Spc. Catherine Sorto faced uncertainty about her post-graduation plans in 2023, she chose to enlist—a decision she now considers the most pivotal for her future. As a first-generation service member, she stepped outside her comfort zone to challenge her full potential, unlocking opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

Sorto, a 35F Intelligence Analyst with the Mississippi National Guard’s 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, is currently assigned to Joint Task Force-District of Columbia (JTF-DC) in support of the "D.C. Safe and Beautiful" mission.

She recently reflected on her experience assisting visitors during the Freedom 250 event. When extreme temperatures threatened public safety, Sorto joined the coordinated response from JTF-DC and its interagency partners. She jumped into action, distributing water and directing civilians to ensure their safety.

"Being in the Army National Guard allowed me to find my passion and discover a bigger purpose: service," Sorto says.

She remains grounded in her commitment, finding peace in her contribution toward a safer world.

"One of my biggest rewards is coming home and seeing how proud my younger sister, Emily, is of me," she shares. "I want to be someone she can look up to, and serving has allowed me to become that person. I serve not only to create a better future for myself, but to help provide a better life and example for my sister."

Though her time in service has just begun, she finds comfort in knowing she is contributing to the world. "I serve for purpose. I serve for opportunity. I serve for Emily."
