    Joint Task Force Southern Guard

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. – For Lt. Cmdr. Valerie Tucciarone, service in the U.S. Navy Reserve is a continuous pursuit of excellence, requiring her to balance operational leadership, personal development and a commitment to readiness both in and out of uniform.

A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Tucciarone commissioned through the U.S. Naval Academy in 2014 and has served more than a decade in uniform, including 10 years on active duty as a Surface Warfare Officer. Now serving as a Selected Reservist assigned to Navy Reserve Center Jacksonville, she continues to play a vital role in operational planning and mission execution across a wide range of disciplines.

“I joined the Navy to challenge myself, serve something larger than myself and develop as a leader in high-stakes environments,” Tucciarone said. “The opportunity to combine problem-solving with leadership and impact made it the right fit for me.”

Tucciarone currently supports Joint Task Force Southern Guard operations at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There she contributes to operational planning and coordination, ensuring mission requirements are executed efficiently in support of broader strategic objectives.

Tucciarone's role as a Surface Warfare Officer spans multiple mission areas from navigation and security to information technology and public affairs, demonstrating the adaptability required of today’s Navy Reserve leaders.

“The Navy Reserve remains agile, lethal, and indispensable to the Navy Total Force,” said Adm. Daryl Caudle, Chief of Naval Operations. “It provides the strategic depth necessary for our Navy to maintain a competitive edge.”

Tucciarone embodies that strategic depth, bringing both military expertise and civilian leadership experience to the force. As the owner of The Fitness Forum, she applies coaching, communication and accountability skills to her leadership style within the Navy.

“Many of the skills I use daily — coaching, communication and program design — translate directly into leadership and team development in the Navy Reserve,” she said.

She built her foundation for success early. Growing up in Las Vegas, Tucciarone learned discipline and consistency, values reinforced through athletics, Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps and mentorship.

“Showing up consistently, even when it’s difficult, is what sets people apart,” she said. “That mindset has carried over into everything I do in the Navy.”

Among her proudest accomplishments is earning her Surface Warfare qualification, a milestone that reflects both technical mastery and teamwork.

“It represents the collective effort of leaders, peers and mentors who helped shape me into the officer I am today,” she said.

Tucciarone credits much of her success to those mentors, particularly Col. McEvoy, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), who encouraged her to pursue a military career and helped her recognize her potential early on.

Today, she continues to pay that mentorship forward, leading Sailors while also pursuing her own professional growth. In addition to running her business, she is working toward becoming a registered dietitian and ultimately an osteopathic physician, with a focus on functional medicine.

For Tucciarone, readiness extends beyond the battlefield.

“As a warfighter, readiness means being physically prepared, mentally sharp and professionally competent at all times so that when called upon, there is no hesitation in executing the mission,” she said.

Whether supporting joint operations abroad or developing leaders at home, Lt. Cmdr. Tucciarone represents the modern Navy Reserve: capable, adaptable and ready to answer the call.
