Many Airmen approaching separation or retirement share similar concerns: finding a job, managing finances and securing housing.
The Transition Assistance Program helps address those concerns by giving service members time, tools and guidance to prepare for life after military service.
Through counseling, workshops and individualized support, the program helps Airmen build a plan well before they leave the Air Force.
"This is a program that prepares service members for their future in the civilian world," said Terra Breault, 52nd Force Support Squadron TAP manager. "We help support them with everything from employment preparation to veteran benefits."
Breault said participation is mandatory and required to begin no later than 365 days before a member’s separation or retirement date, but she encourages Airmen to start earlier.
"The TAP timeline is 18 to 24 months out. That’s when we’d like to see members start," Breault said. "Unfortunately, we have members starting 60 days out, and then they're rushed and they're not fully prepared like they could be."
Breault said one common misconception is that starting TAP early means an Airman has already decided to leave the service. In reality, she said, beginning the process early can help members make a more informed decision about whether to re-enlist, extend or separate.
"If someone starts two years out, that allows them to really make that decision. Do I want to re-enlist, do I want to extend, or do I want to separate?" Breault said. "Just because Airmen want to do this early doesn't mean they're jumping ship."
The program includes four steps: initial counseling, a pre-separation briefing, a weeklong workshop and a final capstone appointment.
Along the way, participants receive guidance from counselors and subject matter experts who help them prepare for employment, benefits and other parts of the transition process.
In addition to resources for service members, spouses may participate in TAP workshops and take advantage of services offered through the Military and Family Readiness Center, including employment assistance and financial counseling.
