Story by 1st Lt. Neil Samson

    NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan

HERAT PROVINCE, Afghanistan - A 35-year-old Afghan woman wounded by insurgent gunfire was medically evacuated by Afghan and coalition forces Sept. 24 in Herat province.

Insurgents engaged Afghan and coalition security forces with automatic machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenade rounds near a tent community in the vicinity of Khralehrasu village.

The security force held their fire until they could locate and identify the origin of enemy fire in an effort to avoid the risk of civilian casualties.

Without regard to civilian presence in the immediate area, insurgents continued to fire at the security force, wounding the woman in the process.

After a quick assessment of her wounds, the woman, escorted by her father, was medically evacuated to Herat for further medical treatment.
