FINLAND – U.S. Special Operations Forces, assigned to 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and Finnish Special Forces Operators conducted a memorial airborne operation June 8, honoring the legacy of Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Crabtree on the 20th anniversary of his sacrifice. Crabtree, who was assigned to Company B, 19th SFG(A) from Columbus, Ohio, was killed in action in 2006 after being struck by an improvised explosive device while deployed in support of combat operations. Two decades later, his memory continues to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before and the responsibility for current generations to preserve that legacy.
The memorial jumps began four years ago as a small gathering of Soldiers who wanted to pause and remember Crabtree with a moment of silence after a routine airborne operation. Since then, the event has grown into an annual tradition. Bringing together current and former members of the unit, family members and Crabtree’s loved ones to honor his service and sacrifice.
“This year is the 20th anniversary of Sgt. 1st Class Crabtree’s passing,” said a Green Beret assigned to the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne). “There aren’t too many people in the unit these days that knew Dan personally, myself included, but as time moves on the unit wants to do what it can to remember its fallen soldiers.”
This year’s memorial jump carried added significance as it marked the first time the event was conducted while the unit was deployed overseas. Although the ceremony was smaller and held away from home, the opportunity to include Finnish Special Forces partners reinforced the shared values and traditions that unite Allied airborne operators.
“The jump just kind of evolved from that,” said the Green Beret. “This is the first year that we’ve done the event while deployed so it’s cool to be able to share it with our Finnish partners.”
Following the jump, participants gathered for a group photo that was shared with Crabtree’s family, continuing a tradition of ensuring they remain connected to the soldiers who continue to carry his legacy forward. For the unit, the memorial is more than remembering one of their own who gave the ultimate sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the generations of paratroopers whose sacrifices shaped today’s force.
“Special Forces is often the tip of the spear, tactically and technologically,” said the Green Beret. “Sometimes we lose sight of our history, and remembering our history and those that came before us helps to keep us grounded and remember who we are despite changes in the battlespace.”
As parachutes descended over Finland, the memorial airborne operation served as both a tribute to one soldier’s sacrifice and a commitment that his legacy will continue to be remembered by those who follow in his footsteps.
