CAMP NAVAJO, Ariz. — The 448th Signal Company, Tactical Installation/Networking - Enhanced (TIN-E) Arizona Army National Guard, completed a major infrastructure modernization project at Camp Navajo Training Site, successfully replacing old cables with a high-speed underground fiber-optic network.
“We want to increase the network speed … and have a more secure network,” said 2nd Lt. Christopher Castro, 448th Signal Co.TIN-E. By replacing old wiring, the base can now handle a large amount of digital information at once, such as large data files, maps, and training videos can be shared instantly. This change makes day-to-day operations much more reliable, preventing system crashes and dropped connections. Ultimately, it ensures that everyone training on-site—from local emergency workers to military units—can communicate faster and work together more effectively during critical exercises.
“So [we’re], always going to be learning, always evolving … as equipment technology advances, we're definitely going to advance too as signal soldiers," said Cpl. Sterling Coleman, 448th Signal Co. TIN-E. The 448th made the most of their time by tackling two major tasks at once: While some Soldiers guided heavy, high-speed fiber-optic cables through complex underground pipes, others practiced using specialized tools to securely connect and lengthen the lines.
This dual training supports a larger Arizona National Guard effort to replace old, fragile wiring with a tough underground system built to survive extreme local weather and heavy vehicle traffic. “We’re up here in Camp Navajo to conduct a signal exercise, pulling out the old fiber legacy cables and installing the new network infrastructure,” Castro said.
The new network dramatically improves the base’s technical capabilities. This upgrade is vital “just so we can keep up to date with what's going on nowadays and how things are progressing and moving faster … and get the job done,” said Spc. Jordan Flores, 448th Signal Co. TIN-E Camp Navajo is utilized by dozens of distinct military, federal, state, and local civilian organizations due to its role as a premier multi-service, regional training site. These improvements will drastically speed up tactical networks for anyone training on-site.
This base upgrade matches a statewide push to bring high-speed internet to northern Arizona National Guard posts. The new system ensures Camp Navajo stays ready to support both military training and emergency response missions across the state and nation.
