CAMP SHELBY JOINT FORCES TRAINING CENTER, Miss. - Soldiers, family members and distinguished guests gathered at the 154th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) auditorium July 12 as Command Sgt. Maj. Douglas L. King relinquished responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. Edward E. Neuman Jr. during a formal change of responsibility ceremony.
Presided over by Col. Kenneth Anthony, commander of the 154th Regiment, the ceremony marked the official transfer of responsibility for the regiment's enlisted force. The tradition symbolizes the continuity of leadership and the unwavering commitment to Soldiers and the unit's mission.
During the ceremony, the regimental colors were passed from Command Sgt. Maj. King to Col. Anthony and then to Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman, representing the transfer of authority, responsibility and accountability from one senior enlisted leader to the next.
"Command Sgt. Maj. King's leadership has strengthened this regiment in countless ways," said Col. Anthony. "He has been directly involved in developing our leaders, supporting initiatives that improve the regiment and providing trusted counsel on the welfare of our Soldiers. I am grateful for his dedication and service. As we welcome Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman, I have complete confidence that he will continue the proud traditions of this regiment while helping lead us into the future."
King served as the regiment's command sergeant major since May 2025, providing senior enlisted leadership and mentorship across the Regional Training Institute. Before assuming responsibility as the regiment's command sergeant major, he commanded the 3rd Noncommissioned Officer Academy Battalion and served in multiple leadership assignments throughout the Mississippi Army National Guard.
"Serving as the command sergeant major of the 154th Regiment has been one of the greatest honors of my career," said Command Sgt. Maj. King. "This organization is successful because of its Soldiers, cadre and leaders who dedicate themselves every day to developing the next generation of noncommissioned officers. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served alongside them and know the regiment is in excellent hands moving forward."
Command Sgt. Maj. King will continue his service as command sergeant major of the 66th Troop Command, Mississippi Army National Guard.
Assuming responsibility as the regiment's senior enlisted leader, Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman, a Pascagoula native who enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard in 1989 as a construction equipment operator, brings nearly four decades of military service and leadership experience to the position. Most recently, he served as the command sergeant major of the 168th Engineer Brigade.
Accepting his new role, Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman said his priority is supporting the Soldiers and instructors responsible for developing the Army's future leaders.
"I'm here to support you," said Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman. "I'm looking forward to learning from you and training alongside you. Every instructor has the opportunity to impact a Soldier's career, just like one of my instructors impacted mine more than 30 years ago. Continue to be professional, continue to strive to be the best at what you do, and never underestimate the difference you make in the lives of the Soldiers sitting in your classrooms."
More than a ceremonial transfer of responsibility, the event reaffirmed the Army's enduring commitment to continuity of leadership, excellence, discipline and taking care of Soldiers. As Command Sgt. Maj. Neuman assumed responsibility as the regiment's senior enlisted leader, the 154th Regiment reaffirmed its mission of developing the next generation of noncommissioned officers for the Mississippi Army National Guard and the Army.
