    Leadership from Chief to Officer

DIEGO GARCIA, BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY

    12.31.1969

Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Kamaren Hill

U.S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia

DIEGO GARCIA, British Indian Ocean Territory (June 16, 2026) – Strong leadership is the backbone of any successful organization and the U.S. Navy is no exception. Lt.j.g. Santana Johnson, installation security officer of Navy Security Forces Diego Garcia, exemplifies that leadership through her commitment to training, readiness and operational excellence. She ensures that security personnel remain prepared and capable of responding to any threat to the installation through training exercises and drills. Her leadership helps shape daily operations and maintains the morale and effectiveness of the command.

Leading the charge is nothing new for Johnson. She enlisted in the Navy in October 2008 as a master-at-arms, and achieved the rank of chief petty officer before commissioning into the limited-duty officer program in 2023.

“Making it to the prestigious rank of a chief petty officer of the Navy, and a MAC at that, made me proud and inspired me to keep pressing,” said Johnson. “I chose to commission as an officer due to my love of leadership and wanting to provide change for my rating if I ever had the opportunity one day.”

Regardless of the challenge, Sailors rise to the occasion. Throughout her career, Johnson has positively impacted hundreds of Sailors through her leadership, mentorship and dedication to the mission.

“When I was a MAC, I was more hands-on with developing the MAs and guiding them to be subject matter experts,” said Johnson. “I was their direct supervisor if there were any problems that had come up. I was also responsible to the senior enlisted master-at-arms, usually a [senior chief petty officer or master chief petty officer], for scheduling, admin, personnel issues, but all things started with me as the Chief.”

Johnson’s approach to leadership has always centered on investing in her Sailors. With over 20 years experience as a mother of three and she often finds many of her junior Sailors are around her children's age. She says that this keeps her grounded and has helped her create an environment where Sailors are empowered to succeed.

“When I arrived on station, there were huge hurdles to get through and the security khaki team was almost depleted,” said Johnson. “Once I identified the right avenues and key players in the department, we restored the pride, the professionalism, and the drive to be a better team. Now we are consistently setting goals and reaching them, we operate as a team, and we enjoy reporting to work. Even though the hours are long for everyone in the department, the majority seem to enjoy their work I would say.”

As she continues her naval service, her influence will undoubtedly extend to many more, leaving a lasting impact on those she leads.
