    Story by Sgt. Keyra Moolenaar

    Joint Task Force DC

"Before I was a mom, I was a Soldier and before that, a military daughter," says U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tareyn Kelly. The daughter of retired National Guard members, Kelly serves alongside three brothers who are infantrymen. Her passion for service was forged as a teenager when her father, uncle, and cousin deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Managing responsibilities on the home front during their absence instilled in her a sense of patriotism and selfless service. Now a 17-year service member, Kelly serves as a unit supply specialist with the Idaho National Guard.

On June 16, 2026, Kelly was administered the oath of re-enlistment by Brig. Gen. Leland Blanchard II, continuing her family's legacy. She is one of 4,500 National Guard members supporting the DC Safe and Beautiful mission, providing critical assistance to the Metropolitan Police Department to ensure the safety of commuters, and visitors throughout the District.

"I am motivated by a desire to support my family, pursue higher education, and serve close to home," Kelly explains. In her civilian career, she serves as a corrections officer for the Idaho Department of Correction. Whether in uniform or in her civilian role, Kelly embodies the Army Values, carrying forward a dedicated legacy of purpose, commitment and duty.
