For the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG), protecting the border is not a new task. Soldiers stand ready to defend the homeland, both stateside and abroad.
It is a duty that Sgt. 1st Class Selena Holleman knows all too well. Seeking new challenges after college, Holleman enlisted in the NCNG and has served for more than 17 years.
“I joined because I wanted to serve my country and my local community,” Holleman said. “I did about six months of research between the branches, and I knew it was going to be Army National Guard.”
Once joining the NCNG, Holleman got to do a job she loved. She was slated to be an Army medic.
“After I graduated medical training, I got the opportunity to deploy with the 163rd ASMC (Area Support Medical Company), 105th MP (Military Police) Battalion to Iraq.” Said Holleman.
During her deployment, she served as the first line of response for medical emergencies in combat. She also assisted with daily sick call, managed outpatient treatments and monitored the long-term health of her fellow soldiers.
Originally from Wilkes County, North Carolina, Holleman continued her medical career serving as a paramedic until 2018, when she accepted a full-time position with the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB).
Currently, Holleman is assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) with the 130th MEB. Her tasks include overseeing the medical readiness of the soldiers who are assigned to secure the Texas portion of the U.S southern border.
Troop readiness has always been a priority for the military. Especially for soldiers assigned to JTF-SB, she ensures soldiers are fit and ready to perform the tasks needed to secure the southern border. Tasks include working in harsh rural environments, emplacing barriers and monitoring the border to detect suspected illegal aliens attempting to cross.
Holleman ensures that soldiers are ready to meet the demands of our nation. Her vital medical support enables a much larger joint mission, as U.S. Northern Command works side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
Ever dependable!
